Today morning I had a meeting with one of my client. He has a new website and want to optimize that website for google. His keywords are pretty high competitive ,so I ask him to target less competitive keywords first. But he is not accepting that and so the conference shifted to the topic "Long tailed keywords or short tailed keywords and which is best for a new website". I asked him to use long tailed keywords first without bleeding the use of short tailed keywords. It is really easy to create a long tailed keyword by carefully adjusting our high competitive keywords (short tailed keywords).
Example :
Let us assume we have a flower selling website and our targeting keyword is Flower. The keyword flower is a little bit tough compared to the keyword rose flower. The search results for the keyword Flower is 142,000,000 and global monthly search volume is 45,500,000. Let us check the details of Rose Flower.Google Search result for the keyword Rose Flower is 19,200,000 and monthly global search volume is 135,000. See how easily we have reduced the competition.
Now we can reduce the keyword competition by adding one more term to the created keyword. Let us check the details of "White Rose Flower".
Global monthly search volume for the keyword "White Rose Flower " is 6,600 and the search result is 9,700,000. Now let us cross check our finding.
Short tailed keyword : Flower
Global monthly Search Volume :142,000,000
Search Results : 45,500,000
Long tailed keyword : White Rose Flower
Global monthly Search Volume :6,600
Search Results : 9,700,000
See how competition reduced. If we only target the keyword flower it is almost impossible to see the website in top results. Keyword White Rose Flower is easier to promote than the shot keyword flower.

I use iSpionage for finding long tail keywords and selecting them. After having the list generated i can simply add one or two words (depending the initial keyword length) and create new long tail keywords. Those long tail can drive qualified traffic to your website faster than short tail keywords, they are easier to rank for since they have lower competition and considerable popularity.
Ranking a Long tailed keyword in Google Search Result is easier compared to short tailed keyword.
