1. Fiber Internet is Growing in Popularity

While most residential Internet connections are either of the cable or DSL types, fiber Internet is rapidly gaining in popularity due to increased availability in various regions. Fiber Internet uses fiber-optic cables to transmit data, which are faster than the standard copper cables used for DSL. This allows you to get much higher speeds, going up to 175Mbps for download.

2. You May Need to Buy or Rent the Equipment

Unless you already have a modem that is compatible with your Internet provider, you will need to buy or rent one. Renting a modem isn't too expensive and usually costs just a few dollars a month. A new one is usually under $100. Some providers will include the cost of modem rental in your Internet price or may give you one for free if you sign a contract for 2 or 3 years.

3. Save Money by Getting More Services from the Same Company

Should you exceed this limit, your Internet access will usually not be cut off, but you will be billed extra for the data transfer that exceeds the limits of your plan. If you plan on downloading large files, or you watch a lot of online video, you will want a plan that includes a bigger amount of monthly data transfer to avoid incurring these additional charges. The good news is that many providers now let you choose an option that gives you unlimited data transfer for just a few extra dollars each month.
